Last August, I was standing in a wilderness stream in Alaska with a colorful Dolly
Varden on the end of my line, and it was putting up a spirited fight for a three-
pound fish. Dozens of Dollys and pink salmon were swimming past my boots in two
feet of water and I was completely absorbed with landing the fish, until my guide
Matt touched me on the shoulder and whispered, "Break the fish off-we have to go,
NOW!" He pointed upstream where a young brown bear was ambling our way, and there
was no mistaking his intent to claim the section of the river I was fishing.
As we hopped back into our skiff and reversed the outboard, the bear fetched a
pink salmon from the spot I was standing just a few minutes earlier. There's
nothing as restorative as exploring wild places where you may not be at the top
of the food chain.
